“This book does not shy away from the truth.”

The publisher of a new coloring book for kids posted a video on his website explaining the thought process behind his work.  The commemorative book, released not long before the ten-year anniversary of 9/11 is called We Shall Never Forget 9/11: The Kids’ Book of Freedom.

Publisher, Wayne Bell, said in a press release that his coloring book is meant to be an educational tool, but many parents are outraged by what they see on the pages.  The first photo in this post shows militants shooting Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.  There is another page that shows bin Laden imagining the impending attacks.  All the pages are in bold back and white so your little ones can fill in the color based on their own imagination.

The interviews I aired in my newscast tonight came from the NBC affiliate in Missouri and included Bell who said the straight facts are what people want.  Others disagreed.

“We feel as if he’s just capitalizing on the 10th anniversary of September 11th,” said Faizan Sayed of the Council on American Islam Relations in Saint Louis.
A parent who KSDK spoke with said coloring in this book would not be fun for kids and that it was sensationalizing the tragedy.
One fact that needs pointing out — the book is intended for children ages ten and older.  It’s up to the parents to decide if this heavy lesson should involve a box of crayons.
